A day in the life of a Northmillian

Web Article

Welcome to our series A Day In The Life of a Northmillian!

An opportunity to look behind the curtain of an international fintech company with 150 tech explorers, living 100% in the cloud and working in small, autonomous product teams.
Today we meet our Senior Frontend Engineer, Sebastian Cyrych - a two-year veteran of Northmill, but with more than 10 years of experience from several international product companies, and on top of that, a Machine Learning evangelist!

What is it that a frontend engineer does really?

I am responsible for our app's architecture - meaning I work with what technologies we will use and how we can enable our developers to deliver fast, safe and correct stuff. It is exciting to be involved in all software development life cycle stages, from feature refinement to CI/CD. For example, I often do code review sessions with our developers to ensure that code quality matches best practices. And I certainly write a few lines of code myself…

We’ve just completed migrating our native apps to React Native, which was challenging but a great experience for the team. What a team effort!

What is your typical working day like?

My typical day starts with reading Slack messages, double-checking my calendar and looking over my personal and the team's Jira board and sprint. The Jira board is our “holy grail” and helps me get a very good understanding of the overall progress, which helps me plan my day effectively. Next up is always the daily stand-up, taking a few minutes with the team trying to figure out if everything runs as planned or if I need to jump in somewhere.

The rest of the day is basically going task per task - but as it is at a growing company, something normally happens, and you need to improvise and dig in where you have to. Change is the only thing that is constant - I love that!

What do you like best about your job?

That I can express myself and be creative - it is freedom under responsibility at Northmill. We are working with the leading tech companies in the world, the newest cloud technology and exploring new stuff constantly. I am surrounded by very smart people - it is inspiring!  What else could a developer dream of?

What advice would you give to someone who is considering working as a Frontend (React, React Native) developer?

Learn how React Native works behind the scenes, how you can use advanced techniques like hooks to separate shared logic from presentational components, or how to use Memo or Callback to optimize performance. Be curious and don't give up easily! But I guarantee you will have fun :)

What do you think the work of Frontend / React Native Engineer will look like in 10 years?

The pace of frontend technologies' evolution is so fast that 10 years feels like 100 years.  My take is that React Native will continue to dominate and it will only become better and more stable with each version. The React Native Community is fantastic and there are some really dedicated people there. But what I do know is that it will continue to be a very interesting technology development, with stuff like Machine Learning and AI becoming better and better each day and much more. So, I think you get a very long way by being curious and solution-oriented - and to be at a company that rewards that!
